Calais first responders were called on Tuesday, January 3, 2023 to the corner of Washington and Downes Street for a frightening incident involving a school bus and a child.

According to Calais Police Department, a young student exited the bus, along with others, and as she crossed, realized she had dropped something.

Maine House, Senate Pass $475M Fuel Assistance Bill

After a marathon day of votes and counterproposals from Republicans in the House and Senate, Governor Janet Mills (D) secured passage of her $475 million fuel assistance package just in time for her second inauguration after securing two-thirds majorities in each chamber. The Senate voted 24-10, while the House tally was 114-29.

Methodist Church Provides Free Lending Library for Community Use

Calais United Methodist Church, located at 849 Main Street, welcomes all to visit its new free lending library.

Reading lovers will find the book locker located right outside the covered entrance of the church.  Anyone who would like to borrow a book can stop by any time, day or night.

So far, there are different genres from children’s books to adult fiction.  There are even a few cookbooks and daily devotional books.

Police Respond to Report of Vehicle Theft

 

Early this morning, Thursday, Jan. 12, 2023, Washington County Sheriff's Department responded to the Circle K convenience store at the corner of Main and South Streets in Calais for a report of a stolen vehicle.

According to Calais Police Sgt. Matt Vinson, just before 5 a.m., the vehicle’s owner had gone into the store to pay for gas, leaving the vehicle running at the gas pumps.  

Two people then got into the vehicle and headed onto South Street.

Local Artist Tom Brennan Donates Piece to Church

Knights of Columbus Raise Over $5,500 for Sarah’s House of Maine

This past fall, Knights of Columbus #149 organized and executed a raffle of 100 gallons of home heating fuel, with all money raised to be donated to Sarah’s House of Maine.  

According to Knight Vinton Cassidy, the group was motivated to host the raffle after a suggestion by church member Cheryl Amber and the high number of people in the community who have been affected by cancer.

Knights of Columbus Donate to Local Special Education Departments

 

The Calais Knights of Columbus, at a social dinner last Sunday night, presented checks to the recipients of funds generated by the annual Tootsie Roll Drive.  

Each year, the Knights of Columbus conduct a charity drive during Indigenous Peoples weekend.  This involves the members standing out in front of stores in the communities of Calais, Baileyville, and Princeton with their yellow vest and cans looking for donations.  Each person who donates receives a Tootsie Roll.
