Christmas Cheer Delivered to Our Older Citizens

A local couple is on a mission to make Christmas a little merrier for some older residents in the Calais area.

Five years ago, Buck and Cindy Wartman used their own money to brighten up the holidays for two older people they knew.  “There seems to be a lot of benefits for the kids at Christmastime, but nothing for the elderly people,” Cindy said.

Grampie Bill’s 7th annual Thanksgiving dinner took place at the Second Baptist Church in Calais on Thursday, Thanksgiving day. 

“Bill and I wanted to thank everyone for their help in pulling off another great Thanksgiving meal. We couldn’t do it without all of you. We served 780 meals and the donation for the food pantry was over $1,200,” said Arlene Gibson.

New Restaurant and Tavern will Energize Downtown in Spring, 2020

With the new year on the horizon, folks can expect to see lots of changes to one downtown building, with a new tavern set to open in May and a restaurant soon to follow.

The former Townhouse Restaurant and Lounge on Main Street has been purchased from the City of Calais by long-time resident Tim Krug.  Krug, a paramedic and firefighter for nearly 30 years, is also a contractor and is completely renovating the building.

Wreaths Across America Kicks Off this Saturday

This Saturday, Wreaths Across America (WAA) will hold its annual HART (Honoring Allies and Remembering Together) Ceremony at Ferry Point Bridge.

According to Amber Caron, of WAA, “The HART ceremony is the second event of the day, the first being the Sunrise Service in Lubec.”  The Sunrise Service is set to begin at 6:52 a.m. at West Quoddy Headlight.  

Beginning at 9:30 a.m., the HART Ceremony will honor the service and sacrifice of military veterans from the United States and Canada with a wreath exchange.

Calais Students Chosen for State Art Show

The Maine Arts Commission sponsors the Winter Maine Excellence in Arts Education Exhibit each year.  This year the artwork of Willow Horch and Violet Dineen of Calais Schools have been chosen for the show.  Willow Horch is in grade 9 and her art piece is a colored marker drawing called, “Girl in a Flower Dress.” Violet’s artwork is also a marker drawing; it’s of a scary creature.  Violet is in grade 4.  Both student artists will have their work displayed in the State House Complex in Augusta.  They will be honored with a reception there in March.  The show will be on display from Dec.
