Calais is once again preparing to pay tribute to the brave men and women of the U.S. armed forces who made the ultimate sacrifice. Memorial Day, observed this year on Monday, May 26, 2025, will be a day of remembrance and gratitude throughout the community.

The solemn observances will begin at Ferry Point Bridge at 9:30 a.m., where representatives from law enforcement, Calais Fire-EMS, and American Legion veterans will gather next to Hardwicke’s. At 10 a.m., the group will march to the bridge for the annual wreath-laying ceremony, open for spectators to observe from both sides of the riverbank.

Following the ceremony at the bridge, the observance will continue at Memorial Park on Main Street, where speakers will offer reflections and tributes. Afterward, attendees are encouraged to join in a brief service at Calais Cemetery, where wreaths will be laid at the Veterans’ burial area in honor of those interred there.

Flag Placement at Calais Cemetery

On Saturday, May 24, 2025, beginning at 8 a.m., volunteers will gather at Calais Cemetery for the annual placement of American flags on veterans’ graves. This heartfelt tradition welcomes participation from the entire community — including families, youth groups, veterans, and civic organizations.

Rain or shine, this event will take place, offering a meaningful way for residents to come together in shared remembrance. Light refreshments will be available for volunteers.
