For one local man, getting area kids active in sports and other activities, while helping to minimize any financial burden to that child’s family, is top priority.  That’s why Ken Holmes wanted to donate to the Calais Recreation Department and reached out to Ian Pratt to also get involved.

Many saw it coming:  the extension of the U.S. and Canada border closure, now closed to non-essential travel until at least August 21st.  First closed in mid-March for 30 days, the restrictions have been extended every 30 days since.  

It has been reported that most Canadians fear a reopening, with confirmed cases and deaths from COVID-19 in the United States the highest in the world.  Canada has flattened its epidemic curve.

At certain times of the year when you go into Walmart, the cashiers will ask if customers would like to donate to the Children’s Miracle Network. All the money collected at the Calais Walmart for Children’s Miracle Network goes to Northern Light Hospital in Bangor to help with equipment, services, research, and more.

As a long-time supporter of the First Amendment and the value of free and open inquiry, leftists cancel culture efforts to silence, deplatform, censor and otherwise stifle speakers and viewpoints they disagree with has angered and repelled me. As a young professor, I naively believed the academy shared those sentiments, but I have been disabused of that notion over the last 20 years.

Summers for over ten years have meant that on Tuesday nights there would be music coming from the Triangle Park on Main Street. Music on the Green has  been a source of enjoyment and community every summer providing a little bit of something for everyone in terms of music. 

This summer the restrictions for COVID-19 left the concert series up in the air. In late June it was announced that the concerts would continue following social distancing guidelines by asking attendees to maintain six feet between each group.

Pembroke proved that there could be a parade on the 4th, despite the present limitations of the times!!  They did a great job!!  No bands and no candy throwing, but fire trucks from Charlotte, Dennysville, Meddybemps, and, of course, Pembroke blew their horns and had lots of waving and cheery faces!  There were several floats and some old vehicles AND the Shriners’ little cars!!  My favorite float was one driven by Fred and Linda Gralenski for the Pembroke Library!

Area kids helped decorate the downtown area with festive July Fourth-themed works of art.  The display was placed at Triangle Park for all to see over the weekend, with all participants entered into a chance for a cash prize donated by FA Peabody. (Photos by Jayna Smith)

In late March as the corona lockdowns and legislative abdications to “science” directed Democratic anti-Trump governors commenced, “Wonder Woman” actress Gal Gadot organized a group of international left-wing celebrities to sing a socially-distanced cover of John Lennon’s 1971 “Imagine.” In Lennon’s socialist dream, utopian religion, countries, borders, war, private property, capitalism, greed, and hunger would all disappear.

Since its inception in 1985, the Calais Lioness Club has been a vital part of the community with its members’ work to enhance the area and assist others in need.  The members of the club work hard at their various fundraisers, and in total, nearly $10,000 is donated annually to local individuals.  

The beautification effort of several volunteers has paid off.  Stop and smell the flowers, read a book, or relax for a moment in the colorful Main Street community garden.  The garden shares space with a new fountain, red granite benches, and a wonderful view of the St. Croix River and Canada. Around 2:30 p.m. on Friday, June 26th, Calais Fire-EMS was notified by a St. Stephen resident of a possible fire near the Carson Road in Calais.  The resident noticed smoke from across the river.  According to Chief Ken Clark, Captain Bill Lee responded to the area where he discovered a woods fire.

Chief Clark said just over four acres “of mixed growth forest land” burned.  The property is owned by Calvin Walker.

Sweeties Downeast Candy Store in Eastport hosted a Chalk Art Day which had local chalk artist Kylie Cooke on hand for help. Calais Regional Hospital is providing additional access for COVID-19 testing each weekday morning via the State’s DHHS Standing Order beginning Monday, July 6 at 8 a.m. The hospital has provided testing services for COVID-19 since the pandemic began; however, patients were required to have a provider’s order.

If there’s one thing that people in Calais know it’s that if you’re feeling hungry, drive by the parking lot on North Street and you’ll find a little blue truck and a man happy to feed you. For ten years Bill Gibson, “Grampie Bill”, has been making it his mission to feed as many people in the Calais area as he can through his food truck and community dinners.

The story of Calais is being told through a fresh lens in the form of Images of America: Calais, a new publication released on June 22nd through Arcadia Publishing. The book marks the first time the St. Croix Historical Society has partnered with a major publisher to share the history of Calais.
