  9. Skatepark Receives Updates and Renovations

    According to Spencer McCormick of the Calais Skatepark Committee, the skatepark has received some updates and needed renovations.  

    With “a recent resurgence of energy and involvement,” McCormick explained, the Calais Skatepark Committee hosted a week-long work session earlier this month “to improve the ramps to create a more advantageous environment for new and inexperienced skaters and BMX bike riders.”

  10. Border Closure Extended Again

    Many saw it coming:  the extension of the U.S. and Canada border closure, now closed to non-essential travel until at least August 21st.  First closed in mid-March for 30 days, the restrictions have been extended every 30 days since.  

    It has been reported that most Canadians fear a reopening, with confirmed cases and deaths from COVID-19 in the United States the highest in the world.  Canada has flattened its epidemic curve.

    At certain times of the year when you go into Walmart, the cashiers will ask if customers would like to donate to the Children’s Miracle Network. All the money collected at the Calais Walmart for Children’s Miracle Network goes to Northern Light Hospital in Bangor to help with equipment, services, research, and more.

  20. Music on the Green Returns

    Summers for over ten years have meant that on Tuesday nights there would be music coming from the Triangle Park on Main Street. Music on the Green has  been a source of enjoyment and community every summer providing a little bit of something for everyone in terms of music. 

    This summer the restrictions for COVID-19 left the concert series up in the air. In late June it was announced that the concerts would continue following social distancing guidelines by asking attendees to maintain six feet between each group.

  21. Popular Lioness Super Draw to be Held in September

    With the cancelation of International Homecoming Festival, it also meant the cancelation of the Calais Lioness Club’s largest fundraiser--well, almost.

    Super Draw has been held for several years during the festival and draws many to the street fair to purchase tickets on nearly 100 different items, all donated by local businesses and individuals in support of the Lioness.

  22. Pembroke 4th of July Festivities

    Pembroke proved that there could be a parade on the 4th, despite the present limitations of the times!!  They did a great job!!  No bands and no candy throwing, but fire trucks from Charlotte, Dennysville, Meddybemps, and, of course, Pembroke blew their horns and had lots of waving and cheery faces!  There were several floats and some old vehicles AND the Shriners’ little cars!!  My favorite float was one driven by Fred and Linda Gralenski for the Pembroke Library!

  27. Princeton FD Receives Donation of Boat and Trailer

    The Princeton Fire Department has received gifts that will further help them in their rescue efforts: a new-to-them boat, motor, and trailer. 

    According to Fire Chief Tony Ramsdell, these items will help the department in incidents such as remote fires, cold water rescues, and missing vessel searches.  Additionally, the equipment will even come in handy for fundraising events, such as rubber ducky races.

    The July 4th Red, White, and Blue Parade rolled through Calais on Saturday afternoon, after making its way from Stueben, through Machias, Pembroke, and all points in between, before hitting its final destination of Indian Township.  Spearheaded by Rep. Will Tuell, with a great organizational effort by Baileyille Fire Chief John McPhee, the parade honored Washington County first responders.

  34. Calais Woods Fire Burns Four Acres

    Around 2:30 p.m. on Friday, June 26th, Calais Fire-EMS was notified by a St. Stephen resident of a possible fire near the Carson Road in Calais.  The resident noticed smoke from across the river.  According to Chief Ken Clark, Captain Bill Lee responded to the area where he discovered a woods fire.

    Chief Clark said just over four acres “of mixed growth forest land” burned.  The property is owned by Calvin Walker.

    Calais Regional Hospital is providing additional access for COVID-19 testing each weekday morning via the State’s DHHS Standing Order beginning Monday, July 6 at 8 a.m. The hospital has provided testing services for COVID-19 since the pandemic began; however, patients were required to have a provider’s order.

  41. Lightning Cause of Alexander Fire

    On Saturday, June 27th, Alexander Fire Department responded to a woods fire.  According to Fire Chief Eddie Burgess, about four acres of land burned. 

    Chief Burgess said the cause of the fire was a lightning strike to a tree.  

    His department was assisted by Calais Fire-EMS, Baileyville Fire Department, and Princeton Fire Department.
