What's Up, Calais?

This Thursday evening, beginning at 6 p.m., is the next scheduled Calais City Council meeting. These meetings are held in the council chambers at the city building and are open to the public. They are also live-streamed on Zoom and the City of Calais Facebook page.
As a reminder on the North Street water/sewer infrastructure project, the detour continues. As per the plan approved by Maine DOT, North Street has been reduced to one-lane traffic for the duration of the project. Inbound traffic traveling south from Route 9 will be directed down South Street, while outbound traffic from Main Street will be directed up North Street. This detour is to improve traffic flow and prevent long backups along the roadway. Businesses in the construction area remain open and accessible under this plan. Southbound travelers can access North Street via Lincoln, Washington, or Main Streets. Please be mindful and use caution when traveling through these primarily residential areas, which have many children and pets. The City of Calais appreciates everyone’s patience and cooperation during this essential infrastructure project.
Calais High School’s Class Night for the graduates is Friday, May 30. Graduation will take place on Sunday, June 1.
The public is invited to a special event at the St. Croix No. 1 Firehouse on Wednesday, June 4, from 5 to 6 p.m., for a discussion focused on the cultural and creative economy of Downeast Maine and ways to expand local participation. Hosted by Sunrise County Economic Council and the Cultural Alliance of Maine, the event will include opportunities to explore local challenges and opportunities, learn about relevant state and federal policies, and hear updates on the Downeast National Heritage Area management planning process. Light refreshments will be served.
Mark Saturday, June 7, on your calendar for the annual plant sale to benefit CDRC. This will take place at Flat Iron Park from 9 a.m. to noon. The sale typically includes a variety of annuals, perennials, houseplants, herbs, vegetables, shrubs, and even young trees. If you have any to donate as you begin your spring gardening, it would be greatly appreciated, and one may call Jane Eaton at 207-454-2812 for more details.
Send me your news, your shout-outs for good deeds done, or your well wishes to give, and I’ll be sure to share them here. Until next week, I hope you stay well, stay safe, and be happy.
